“light on” in the dual meaning of “to turn light on” and “to throw light on”. in this synthetic and contracted expression, used as the title of this project, lie an ontological meaning and a metaphorical meaning of the word light, as on two sides of the same coin. in the first case the luminous medium manifests its essence when the video-projector device is turned on. the light is on, now you need to decide what to do with it. in the second case, through the projection mapping technique, the body impacts with the surface of a given object being partially reflected and partially absorbed, revealing, denouncing, enhancing and reformulating the presence of the latter. it is here that the figurative metaphor takes shape and it is in this intriguing dimension that the concept of this work emerges:
nell’istante in cui la luce colpisce un atomo qualsiasi, essa ingloba in se stessa la sua storia atomica, intricandosi sempre di più.
disregarding the importance of the object/subject on which the light affects would increase the risk of creating an incomplete visual art project. “light on”, specifically, draws its lifeblood from being posed with a diametrically opposed attitude to the one just criticized. it follows that the surface on which the light affects, will highlight its structural, historical and contextual characteristics, through a thorough research.an even more important factor for design purposes is the intent to shed light on situations and contexts placed in the shadow by mnemonic oblivion.
what better way to turn on the light and aim it effectively at a situation, to enunciate/denounce it? put in place this operation using the technique of projection mappign – customarily applied in reassuring and inflated urban contexts – can only amplify the purpose qualitatively, leading to potential interesting implications, both in terms of content and expressive. therefore, light on!
the fact that on this occasion the element of interest is the war artifact named regelbau m272 is due in large part to the contingency: in the venetian territory the presence of this type of buildings (fortifications, bunkers, casemates, etc.) is important, witnessing the historic role of stronghold and defensive outpost – from the serenissima republic (1462- 1797), passing through the french empire (1804 – 1814) and the austrian one (1804 – 1867), up to the kingdom of italy (1861 – 1946) – of the lagoon city and the venetian lagoon from the 14th to the 20th century. in short, it’s hard not to come across one of these. on the other hand, it’s easy to ascertain the poor state of preservation of these historic buildings.
the casemates regelbau m272 are present in the island of ca ‘roman, pellestrina, venice.
